The Women In Jazz Archive
The old adage "it's a man's world" has never been truer than when applied to the history of the Jazz world. Although there have been many women who became stars in the world of Jazz, until recently the big names were usually vocalists. There was no Louise Armstrong blowing her horn or Benita Goodman out front leading the band. It isn't that women couldn't do it, society just didn't work that way. So women who wanted to pursue a career in jazz music either went overseas, worked as second hand musicians or took the only avenue that society left open to them and excelled at it... vocalization. Fortunately for the music world, society has progressed and women are now free to pursue any career they choose, including that of jazz composer, artist or instrumentalist.

The "Women In Jazz" Archive is maintained by The JazzUSA Foundation as part of an ongoing effort to promote jazz music and jazz artists. It is intended as a means to collect, present and preserve information about Women in Jazz, both past and present. This collection covers the full spectrum of years and genres, but is by no means all-emcompassing. This Archive is a living work, so if you know of someone that should be included here please let us know.
